Low-Key Lighting

Mostly shadow, a few hard pools of light.

Low-Key Lighting example: Before the Bell

What it is

Low-key lighting keeps most of the frame dark and lets a single hard source carve out the subject. It is the lighting of noir, thrillers and interrogations.

When to use it

The fewer the sources, the stronger the mood.

How to prompt it

Name one source and where it is: "single hard light above the table, deep shadows on the walls".

Low-key lighting, a single hard light above a metal table in an interrogation room, deep shadows on the walls, desaturated green grade.
